Goteborg, Sweden

Our Home for a day

I’ve been recounting my adventures while not on the road. After spending a few days in Oslo. We make our way into Sweden stopping at Goteborg (pronounced “Gothenburg”) for a day.

Barken Viking Hotel

We left Oslo after lunch and arrived in Goteborg four hours later. We were greeted with a beautiful sunny afternoon! A 15 minute walk, and we were at, likely, our most unique accommodation for this trip: The Barken Viking Hotel. It is an old sailing ship that has been converted into a hotel. Upon checking in we took some time to explore the ship and were impressed with how great it was! If it were summer, the upper decks would be an awesome place to grab a drink, relax and meet people!

Evening in Goteborg

After settling in a little, we took a stroll along the water in the late afternoon/early evening. We quickly learned that Goteborg is lovely and enjoyed the waterfront sunset views! In the evenings many of the waterways and canals were lit up and it somewhat reminded me of Paris. Goteborg certainly has the potential to be a very romantic city!

Exploring Goteborg

We had a full day in goteborg and intended to explore and enjoy the city. We walked through the city enjoying the pace, the scenery and the atmosphere.  Goteborg is a beautiful city and everywhere you looked there was something cool to see!

Skansen Kronan & Slottskogen Park

Through our exploring we hiked up a small hill, where at the top we got to see the Skansen Kronan, an old military fortress that overlooked the city in all directions. While we didn’t enter the fortress we did get some great views of the city.

Afterwards we made our way to Slotsskogen which is this huge park in the middle of the city. Sadly it was much too big for us to explore in the time we had, but we did enjoy the parts we did see!

Saluhallen

We headed back towards the center of the city for lunch. We had read about this food market that we really wanted to try called Saluhallen. Along with ready to eat food, there are things like spices, coffee, cheese and other items for sale. My sister ordered a donair while I picked up a goulash (I was feeling “stew”/”soupy”). We decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and found a park bench along the water to sit and eat.

After what was a “busy” schedule in Oslo, we really liked the change of pace, leisurely exploring this wonderful city!
