How much did my trip to Cambodia and Japan Cost?

The following will be an accounting of my 2024 trip to Cambodia and Japan. If you’ve not read the blog, you can do so here. Or if you want a small wrap up, you can check that out here. It can provide some context to the costs below! All prices will be in Canadian (or converted into Canadian when it shows up on my CC bill).

The Costs

All in all this whole trip cost (me individually) $3082.95with a per day cost of $181.35 over 17 days. And it breaks down as follows:

Transportation    $1374.48 (+147, 500 Points)
Accommodations + $833.25
Food & Beverage + $496.00
Miscellaneous + $379.22
Total = $3082.95

The Transportation ($1374.48 + 147, 500 Points)

In total, the transportation costs for this trip total $1374.48 with a few point redemptions. Transportation can be broken down into two main sections: Airfare and Ground Transportation which costs $1117.62 and $256.86 respectively.

The Flights ($117.62 + 147,500 Points)

In total my airfare cost $1117.62 and 147, 500 Alaska and Aeroplan points. For the Airfare the following are all my flights taken on this trip:

  • (Air Canada/Singapore Airlines/Thai Airways Business Class) Vancouver-Seattle-Los Angeles-Singapore-Bangkok($197.97 + 87,500 Aeroplan Points)
  • (Thai Airways Economy Class) Bangkok-Vientiane ($137.40)
    • The true cost would have been $238.40 but I redeemed $101.00 worth of TD Reward points to bring the cost down.
  • (Air Asia Economy Class) Vientiane-Bangkok-Siem Reap ($232.13 + 42.10 baggage add on)
  • (VietJet Economy Class) Siem Reap-Hanoi-Nagoya ($402.49)
  • (Japan Airlines/Alaska Airlines Business Class) Tokyo-Seattle-Vancouver ($105.53 + 60000 Alaska Miles)

Getting around on the Ground ($256.86)

My ground transportation cost $256.86. Most of the transportation on the ground were ride shares and airport transfers. In Japan there is the airport train in Nagoya and the shinkansen between Nagoya and Tokyo. Because I use a Suica metro card for the subways, I estimated a cost on the card for my total subway usage in Japan. The following are all my ground transportation costs for the trip:

  • Laos Loca rides ($30.53)
  • Siem Reap Grab rides ($19.08)
  • Siem Reap Airport Transfer 2x ($91.14)
  • Japan Train Tickets ($76.11)
  • Japan Suica Metro estimation ($40)

In general the costs are pretty straight forward. I didn’t include my full day tuk tuk ride in Angkor wat as I’ll include that as a tour cost.

The Accommodations: ($833.25)

A good chunk of the costs for this trip are my accommodations. Thankfully South East Asia is relatively affordable. Taking advantage of some travel points currencies to bring the cost of several of my accommodations down also helps. Oddly my most expensive per room stay is my overnight in Seattle. All of my accommodation costs in total come out to $833.25. Below are all the different places I stayed at:

  • 1 Night Skybridge Airport Hotel ($177.92)
  • 1 Night Mintra Hotel ($109.78)
  • 3 Nights Eightfold Urban Resort ($22.21)
    • The true cost would have been $314.19, but I redeemed $291.98 worth of CIBC Adventura points to bring the cost down.
  • 3 Nights Lamp Light Books Hotel ($118.49)
    • As part of the HSBC to RBC transition my credit card had a one time $100 Hotel credit. The original price was $218.49
  • 5 Nights Sake Bar Hotel ($404.85)
    • The true cost would have been $724.50, but I redeemed $319.65 worth of Scene points to bring the cost down.

Food and Beverage ($496.00)

Food is one of the best parts while travelling. I’ve tried my best to track food spending, but in Asia it still proves to be difficult because there is still an emphasis on cash transactions. Most of the total is from credit card receipts and the other portion is from an estimate based on cash expenditures. I suggest taking this total with a grain of salt! In total my trackable expenses for meals and snacks throughout my trip amounted to $496.00.

Miscellaneous Expenses ($379.22)

There are a myriad of miscellaneous expenses for this trip. Because of this there are a variety of expenses on this trip. This ranges from eVisa costs to activity entry fees. It also includes data connectivity for Asia. In total these expenses add up to $379.22.  The following are most of the trackable activity and miscellaneous expenses:

Totals

After adding everything up, we get a grand total of $3082.95. Averaging this out over 17 days, we get an average cost of $181.35 per day.
