Breakfast and Coffee
Right across the street from our airBnB is a cool little coffee shop called Hawaiian Village Coffee. It seems fairly popular because in the morning there is a line right out the door. We end up waiting a little before ordering and getting our coffees. In the same plaza is a McDonald’s and who could pass up an opportunity to get a Hawaiian McDonald’s breakfast of rice, eggs and sausage.
Da Kitchen
After breakfast we hang out in our AirBnB a little bit before heading out. Our intention today is to drive down to the Kihei area and see what it has to offer. The drive normally takes around 40 minutes, but with traffic we take about an hour before arriving. Our first stop is (of course!) a food stop called Da Kitchen. Both Antetokounmpo and Cactoose had this place on their lists because of their deep fried masubi. Because this isn’t going to be lunch we roder just the masubie to try it out. Given how good regular masubi already is. I didn’t find deep frying it, set it apart that much. While it’s a tasty treat, I don’t know if I would go out of my way just for this. Because we had breakfast not too long before this stop, we didn’t order anything else. But in looking at what some of the other patrons had, I think Da Kitchen is a safe bet for a meal if you find yourself nearby!
Kula Country Farms
I’d like to say that we spent a good amount of time in Kihei but that would be a lie! We spent a little time walking around a few places, but because we didn’t intend to be at the beach, we mainly drove through. Our original plan was to spend the afternoon in Kihei, before making our way back to central Maui and head up Haleakala Volcano to try and catch the sunset. However, with our visit to Kihei not really amounting to much, we had time to kill. We ended up driving back to Kuhului and visiting Target (which oddly enough seemd like the busiest spot in the city!)
After walking around target for a little, we hop back into the car and start driving up towards the volcano. After a little bit of driving we stop off at Kula Country Farms. It’s like a small road side fruit stand with some amazing views of Maui.
Sadly, I’d like to say that we made it to the top of the volcano and experienced an amazing sunset and took lots of pictures. But as we were driving, the higher we got the darker and cloudier it seemed to get. After driving for an hour or so, we decided to turn back. We didn’t think the views would be great if we got stuck in the clouds. So we ended up turning around and headed straight for another few food spots on the list.
Tin Roof & Kraken Coffee
On the way back to our AirBnB, we stop off at two other food spots on our list, Tin Roof & Kraken Coffee. Tin Roof is a popular spot that features Hawaiian food that is fused with Asian cooking techniques. It comes highly recommended and so we had to go. We order several items to share and I am happy to report that it’s a very tasty spot and well worth the visit.
Kraken Coffee is another spot that has some good iced coffee offerings and so another thing for us to check off the list. I think all in all everything is super tasty and really did hit the spot, even after the disappointment of missing out on the sunset viewing at the volcano.
The rest of our evening is spent chilling out at our AirBnB and chatting amongst friends. Part of coming to Maui was not only to visit a new place, but also to catch up with friends since this Pandemic did limit our ability to hang out over the past few years. So spending some time intentionally together is just what the doctor ordered!
Tomorrow we meet up with Gimpy and boyfriend whom we’ll call Legend! We plan to spend the day with them and explore new things together!
A good day😋😋😋!
I meant to ask how Kula Farms was! Kula farms is just past the entrance to the road up the volcano right? Did you get any fruits? I agree that the views on that road up to the volcano is pretty stellar, don’t reallllly need to get to the top!
Ha Ha No fruit for us, we were mainly there for view! I think at this point int he trip we realized we bought too much fruit from Costco and were trying to actively get rid of fruit…. (as you know! )
