I’ve been recounting my adventures while not on the road. We spent some time in Bergen exploring the Norwegian Fjords. Now it was time to visit Oslo, Norway for a few days.
The Bergen Railway
When we had first decided to train to oslo, I wasn’t really looking forward to the 7 hour train ride. However soon after departing Bergen station, I soon realized I was in for a treat. We were treated to some stunning views and amazing scenery. Reading more about this line, I learned that is one of the highest railway lines in Europe as it crosses the Hardangervidda plateau. My only regret was that it didn’t stop more for us to take pictures. As long as the trip was, it is a pleasure to ride and highly recommend it to anyone who loves trains or nature.
We left at noon and arrived in Oslo in the evening. As great as the train trip was, we were pretty pooped by the time we ended. We didn’t get much chance to nap as we were fixated on the beauty throughout our trip. We found our hotel, checked in and crashed finishing a very awesome travel day!
Similar to when we were in Copenhagen, we took advantage of the Oslo Pass, which gave us free access to transit and admission to many of the big attractions throughout the city. If you find the attractions something that you’d be interested in, look into it as it does end up saving you some money.
Oslo Opera House
Early the next day we set out to explore Oslo after a quick breakfast. We walked towards the water and ended up at the Oslo Opera House. This is a beautifully designed structure with lots of very cool angles that you could walk and climb. We spent an hour or two here walking up, down and inside the building admiring the surrounding views from the top.
Oslo City Hall
We continued along the water until we found ourselves in front of Oslo City Hall. This building is beautifully decorated inside, and rightfully so! Every year the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held here in the main hall. We enjoyed a quick tour of the Hall where we briefly learned of its history and functions. Conveniently, right across the street from City Hall is the Nobel Peace Center, a museum about the Nobel Peace prize. So afterwards we popped across and toured that museum as well.
Oslo Waterfront
We were a bit “museumed out” and a bit hungry, so we stopped at a small Hot dog stand and grabbed a quick snack/lunch. How can you go wrong with a bacon wrapped hot dog? One thing I’ve loved while in Scandinavia is the fact that almost all hot dogs seem to give you a hot dog where the bun is too small for the wiener, how can you go wrong with that?!
With some food in our bellies, we continued our exploration along the water. We discovered an awesome area full of restaurants, patios and seating. It had a great vibe and it was a joy to be in this environment on a beautiful day!
We spent most of the afternoon enjoying the vibe, the area and the beauty that is Oslo! We passed by their National Assembly and also enjoyed strolling down random streets.
I was pleasantly surprised with how beautiful Oslo is and really enjoyed exploring such an awesome city! There was a lot to look forward to the next few days!
