Stockholm, Sweden Pt. 3

I’ve been recounting my adventures while not on the road. We continued to visit some major stockholm landmarks. As our time in Stockholm came to an end we would keep exploring this wonderful city.

Skansen Open Air Museum

Our first stop of the day was Skansen.  It is an “open air museum” which originally was meant to exhibit the rural culture of Sweden.  Today it looks like it is this huge park that has a zoo, outdoor auditorium and heritage village. Its actually quite cool and not like anything I’ve seen before, normally attractions would either be a zoo, or a heritage site, or a performing area. But in this case it looks like its a combination of all of the above! We spent the better part of the morning walking around. There’s a good amount of real estate to cover and we really enjoyed the zoo portion of it.

While not the largest zoo we’ve visited it did allow us an opportunity to see some animals I’d not seen before. Namely the Sloths and Naked Mole Rats!

Boat Sightseeing

Our next stop in our quest to maximize the value of our Stockholm Cards was a boat sightseeing tour through the rivers of Stockholm.  Stockholm itself is made up of several islands and so going through the different riverways was a great way to see the city from a different perspective! We were very fortunate that the sun started to peek out, so we were blessed with some amazing weather!

Ikea

Our final stop was something that I had been eagerly looking forward to ever since we decided to come to this part of the world. I’ve always been a big fan of Ikea and wanted to see where it all started.  While the Ikea we went to wasn’t the “first” ikea, it was the largest Ikea in the world (at the time in 2012).

We actually ended up spending a lot of time in Ikea.  For those of you who really enjoy visiting Ikea, you can probably attest to how much time it actually takes to wander through the whole showroom and shopping area. This particular Ikea officially has four floors laid out in a circular pattern that allowed you to spiral down through each floor.  While the directory shows “four” what they don’t really list is the “.5” floor on each floor in the center of the circle that really is its own floor as well. So essentially you could make the case that is actually six or seven floors depending on how you choose to count it.

To add to our exploring time, each “floor” had a cafe or if on the top floor a restaurant. Back at home, I actually quite enjoy Ikea food, and so given my new found love for Scandinavian food, I was excited to marry the two and eat at a Swedish Ikea! I wasn’t disappointed! (Sorry for some of the blur, I only had my phone camera out with me)

If you enjoyed going to Ikea at home, I’m sure making a visit to this one would be something to add to your list of things to visit here in Sweden, I know the minion enjoyed it 😉
