Recounting some of my adventures while not on the road. I traveled through Antarctica and South America in early 2015. With our Antarctic expedition complete we make a return through the Drake passage and spend our last days in Argentina.
Drake and Cape Horn
I had mentioned earlier that the wind had been picking up and our return voyage across the Drake passage was far from a calm affair. Like on the way over, I spent a good deal of it in my bunk. However what was new this time was that the waves were so rough I recall sometimes feeling like I was standing upright while still lying in my bed. It was pretty rough and a majority of our group was in their cabins for most of the crossing.
Near the end of the crossing things did settle and we were able to wander about the boat again. It was perfect as we were just in time to round Cape Horn the southern most tip of South America. The water is generally rough here as two oceans meet, but at the same time I feel very blessed to be able to say I’ve been here!
Ushuaia
With the Drake behind us, we returned to the calmer waters of the Beagle Channel for our final sail into the Port of Ushuaia. Our morning coming into the port afforded us some magnificent views of the beautiful town. I will say again that I was pleasantly surprised with how beautiful Ushuaia is and highly recommend it as a destination and not just a transit city.
Buenos Aires
Our trip was coming to an end, but we would spend one more day in Buenos Aires before hopping on a plane home. We spent the day exploring and visited Cafe Tortoni one of Buenos Aires’ oldest coffee shops, the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral (Where Pope Francis is from) and a coastal ecological reserve that opened up to the Atlantic ocean.
Sadly it was time to head to the airport for the long flights home. on our way to the airport we were treated to one last sunset, as if to say Good bye.
Homeward Bound
My friends and I said our good byes to make the flights home, we would route through DFW before going home to Vancouver with some unique memories that will last us a lifetime.
As we bring this throwback to a close, I’ll spend one more week to wrap everything up before moving onto another past trip.
